Round 3 Opponent never showed up. Oh well, 40 free play points for me.

Tonight Full block Time Spiral drafts (TPF) starts on mtgo, my favourite draft format ever. This format is to a certain extent defined by a common in the last pack: Sprout Swarm

Put a green 1/1 saproling token into play.

It starts out very innocous, putting a 1/1 in play on turn 4 or thereabouts. Very soon, however the tokens from sprout swarm will help pay for the spell, and its not uncommon for a player to cast Sprout swarm 4+ times a turn at instant speed. These tokens will gum up the ground or be combined by masspumps like Tromp The domains or Haze of rage. Other combos is Primal Forcemage which will make the tokens the 3/3 the turn they come into play, making attacking very hard for the opponent. Also there are a lot of saprolings that saccs for value, the deadliest combo is possibly Deathspore Thallid+Sprout Swarm.

You cant beat sprout swarm with removalspells and global sweepers because of the buyback so it can be a frustrating card to play against.

Some people claim Sprout Swarm ruins the format but i disagree, since there are a lot of answers in almost all colors, you just have to be aware of them in the jungle that is TPF drafts. Therefore i have here listed answers.

Counterspells     (Blue)

Normally counterspells are decent cards, not great. TPF is on the slowish side though, so counterspells are maindeckable. You can easily side them out if you play against a nongreen aggressive deck.

Time Spiral/Timeshifted:    Cancel, Draining Whelk, Spell Burst, Mystic Snake, Voidmage Prodigy

Planar Chaos:   Dismal failure, Spellshift

Future Sight: Pact of Negation, Delay (only delays it, since they can still pay buyback) Nix (only works if they use only creatures to pay for it)  Logic Knot

All of these cards are maindeckable except for Spellshift, which i would only play if ive seen sprout swarm, and Nix which i would never play, Sprout swarm or no. I guess if my opponent had multiple Giant Dustwasp and/or Durkwood Baloths and Sprout swarm, maybe.

Also, Dash hopes doesnt count since its not a counterspell, its a bad faceburnspell. Mana Tithe also is garbage and too situational.

Discard    (Black and Blue)

TS/Tsf:   Psychotic Episode, Mindstab, Haunting Hymn, Stupor

PC: Venarian Glimmer, Wistful Thinking

FT: Augur of Skulls, Shimian Specter

Only Psychotic Episode and Venarian Glimmer are hard answers, but all of these cards are maindeckable except for Wistful Thinking.

Small Sweepers  (Red)

You prefer small sweepers before global since the sweepers are only temporary so you want to leverage the time you  buy by keeping a board presence:

TS/Tsf: Subterranean Shambler, Sulfurous Blast

PC: Pyrohemia,  Rough//Tumble,  Crovax Ascendant hero.

FS: Festering Marsh

These cards are all solid, Of these Pyrohemia is one of the best cards in the set, its a pestilence after all.

Other answers:

PC: Voidstone gargoyle, Stronghold Overseer, Magus of the Moat, Wheel of fate

I don't like wheel of fate, the others are fine except Voidstone gargoyle which is awesome.

Alternate strategy:

A good way to sprout swarm is to use flyers and/or shadowcreatures. Sprout swarm isnt the fastest card so if you can assemble enough fliers and/or shadowcreatures you can hopefully kill them before Sprout swarm beats you, especially if they dont have access to global pump.

Deep-Sea Kraken is another good way of punishing someone who plays a lot of spells, and it can ignore the saprolings.

Summary: The grixis colors have the most answers to Sprout Swarm. If youre drafting G/W, be prepared that byou might have a hard timje beating Sprout swarm. Prioritize evasioncreatures.
